      Özlərinin diskursiv inkişaflarının salnaməsini aparmağın müxtəlif səbəblərə görə sahədəki müxtəlif yanaşmalar və ya fikir məktəbləri üçün faydalı olacağını hesab etməyim o demək deyildir ki, fənn tarixi sadəcə olaraq legitimləşdirmə və tənqidi analiz üçün nəqliyyat vasitəsi kimi xidmət göstərməlidir. Gunnell-in qeyd etdiyi kimi, çox vaxt həqiqət əfsanədən daha inandırıcı olur və çox böyük həyati qüvvə daşıyır (1991). Sahənin tarixçələrinin prezentist olması meylinin tez-tez ciddi təhriflərə gətirdiyi aydın olmuşdur. Sahənin keçmişi haqqında dəqiq bir şey söyləmək cəhdi, sahənin hazırki xarakteri haqqında nüfuzlu bir şey söyləmək istəyindən daha faydalı olardı.

      Kifayət qədər aşkardır ki, BM-in fənn tarixini bərpa etmək üçün çoxlu sayda yanaşma və metodologiyalar istifadə edilə bilər. Mən başqa bir yerdə ardıcıl olmayan daxili tənqidi tarix kimi təsvir edilə biləcək tarixşünaslıq yanaşmasını (Schmidt, 1998a, 1998b) müdafiə ediyim halda, Guzzini (1998) tarixi-sosioloji yanaşmanı müdafiə edir, Waever (1998) elmin sosiologiyası baxışını qəbul edir, Smith (1995) isə Foucault tərəfindən işlənmiş genealoji metodu müdafiə edir. Sahədə bu yanaşmaların hamısına çatacaq qədər və daha artıq yer vardır, lakin vacib məqam ondan ibarətdir ki, fənn tarixi, həlledici anlayışların yaradılmasının və beynəlxalq siyasətin öyrənilməsinin qarşısında durmaqda davam edən mərkəzi dilemmalar haqqında düşünmək üçün əlavə fəza açılması işində nəqliyyat vasitəsi ola bilər. Lakin bu anlayışlar BM-in tarixi barəsində əvvəllər görülmüş işlərə əziyyət verən yanlış təsəvvürləri aradan qaldırmaqdan asılıdır.
