      2.4 Experience. Study the theory at pages 93-94. Translate sentences 1-7 in writing. Write down all Russian equivalents of the word “experience”.

      2.4.1 Look through sentences 2.4 and find the following expressions in English:

      Буквально, набраться опыта, справиться, протянуть (передать), ввалиться, черствый хлеб, прекратить зрелище, намного превосходить ожидания, привлечь внимание, отчаянная попытка, докопаться до истины, за гранью, разделить удовольствие.

      2.5 WORK WITH THE TEXT

      2.5.1 Comment on the reading rules on pronouncing sound [ʃ] in the following words: Marcia, Sheavly, radishes, should, fresh, emotionally, confidential.

      2.5.2 Read the proverb, discuss its meaning, illustrate it with suitable situations and guess what the text is about: Early to bed and early to rise makes a man wealthy, healthy and wise.

      2.5.3 Read the text paying attention to the reading rules in the words:

      • garden, market, sparse, rhubarb, snarl, undemanding, imparts, chance, laugh, plant;

      • enormous, strawberries, foresight, outdoors, talk, water;

      • parents, experience, here, interfere.

      • whims, zinnia, grandeur, produce.

      2.5.4 Make sure you read the international words used in the Unit 2 correctly; do they fully correspond in meaning to their Russian counterparts? Give Russian equivalents to: dictated, managed, retrospect, associated, family, visiting, expression, zinnia, nostalgic, practices, millions, chance, nerves, emotionally, fruits, discourse, analysis, fact, extraordinarily, intriguing, shake, kaleidoscope, aspect, deduce, mass-produced, design, line, character, officially, federation, continents, European, passionate, confidential, plan, patient, positive, shock, coffee, euphemism, gentleman, project, tobacco, condition, practical, aerobics, automobile, club, duet.

      2.5.5 Find synonyms to the words ENORMOUS and TINY. Find examples of their use (Longman on-line dictionary).

      2.5.6 Read the phrases or sentences from the text corresponding to the following:

      Участок, выделенный мне; оглядываясь назад, вспоминаю; были достаточно предусмотрительны, чтобы; как для детей, так и для взрослых; меня охватывает восторг, когда; вызывает чувство удивления; в то же время; без нервотрепки.

      2.5.7 Do the following:

      • Enumerate vegetables, mentioned in the text. Find more garden plants in the dictionary.

      • Make a list of garden activities from the text. Consult a dictionary and find garden activities for spring, summer and autumn season.

      • Find some 10-15 names of flowers often grown in gardens.

      • What makes gardening so popular?

      • What are the benefits of gardening for children?

      • What is the best way for parents to bring up their children?

      2.5.8 Translate the text from Russian into English:

      Текст называется «Здоровый, богатый и мудрый» и рассказывает о пользе садоводства. Отметим для начала, что эти слова являются частью английской пословицы «Кто рано встает, тому бог дает», происхождение которой приписывается Бенджамину Франклину. Позднее было много комментаторов, желающих поразвлечься за счет Франклина, однако автор текста, очевидно, относится к пословице с уважением. И в самом деле – никакой другой вид деятельности, кроме садоводства, не приносит нам столько здоровья, богатства и мудрости, не заставляет нас вставать рано по утрам и ложиться спать уставшими, но довольными своей работой. Кто-то может оспорить точку зрения автора, считая садоводство лишь физической работой. Но, конечно, садоводство это нечто гораздо большее, особенно если мы говорим о его пользе для семьи.

      2.5.9 Continue to retell the text, dwelling on the questions:

      2.5.10 Translate the text from Russian into English, using vocabulary and speech patterns of the text:

      Квартира была огромной, но, однако, комната, отведенная в мое распоряжение, была крошечной. Когда я вошел в нее, то увидел полный беспорядок (mess, chaos, disorder, snarl). С потолка свисала паутина(cobweb), разрозненные предметы мебели были разбросаны там и сям по комнате. Меня охватило негодование, и я собрался уйти, как увидел листок бумаги. Мои хозяева предусмотрительно оставили мне записку с телефоном приходящей уборщицы (charwoman, house girl) и извинениями за беспорядок.

      2.6 Translate from English into Russian paying attention to the link verbs:
