      BATTY, George. Proprietor of a menagerie, retired about 1859; lived in Jersey. d. Raune, France 5 June 1867 aged 64.

      BATTY, William (only brother of the preceding). Proprietor of a large circus with which he travelled all over Great Britain and Ireland; converted Lambeth baths, London, into a circus which he opened Nov. 1841 as the Olympic Arena; opened the Surrey theatre Whitsuntide 1842; rebuilt Astley’s and opened it 17 April 1843, lessee 1843–55 and 1861–62. d.       BATTYE, Wigram (8 son of George Wyngard Battye of Bengal civil service). b. Kensington, London 13 May 1842; ensign 6 Bengal European regiment 1859; wing officer, adjutant and commandant of cavalry of the Corps of Guides successively 1863 to death; accompanied as a noncombatant the army led by Crown prince of Germany against the French 1870; killed at Futtehabad, Afghanistan when leading the Guides against the Kugiani Afghans 31 March 1879.
