begin v. [began; begun] bắt đầu, mở đầu, khởi sự: to ~ with trước hết
Note: The first word within the square brackets began is the past tense of the headword; the second word begun is its past participle. In cases where a single word doubles up as both past tense and past participle, the square brackets will have only one word shown, eg.
feed 1 n. thức ăn cho súc vật, cỏ, rơm, cám, bèo; bữa ăn/chén; chất liệu đưa vào máy 2 v. [fed] cho ăn, cho bú; nuôi nấng, bồi dưỡng; ăn (cơm); ăn cỗ; đưa [chất liệu] vào máy
3. If there is more than one spelling for the past tense and/or past participle form of a word, this is clearly indicated by the use of “/”, eg.
learn v. [learned/learnt] học, học tập, nghiên cứu; được biết, nghe nói: he ~ed how to drive a car anh học lái xe hơi/ô tô; to ~ by heart học thuộc lòng; we ~ed that he had failed the examination chúng tôi được biết là cậu ta trượt rồi

• plural/singular form of the headword, eg.
goose n. (pl. geese) ngỗng; ngỗng cái; thịt ngỗng
lice n. (sing. louse) rận, chấy
• alternative spelling of the word (preceded by the word also)
kale n. (also kail) cải xoăn
• another word that has the same meaning as the headword, eg.
gaol 1 n. (= jail) nhà tù: to be sent to ~ đi ở tù 2 v. bỏ tù
• abbreviation/full term of the headword, eg.
facsimile (usu. abbr. fax) n. bản sao, bản chép
OCR n., abbr. (= optical character recognition) sự nhận ra chữ của máy vi tính
• other pertinent information, eg.
inch n. insơ (= 2.54 cm); một chút xíu; một tấc: give him an ~ and he’ll take an ell/a mile Ðược đằng chân lân đằng đầu [1 ell = 45 inches]; every ~ an artist trong hệt như một nghệ sĩ; within an ~ of his life suýt nữa thì toi mạng
4. Sample sentences using the headwords are given first in English, followed by the equivalent Vietnamese meaning, eg.
gamble 1 n. cuộc đánh bạc, cuộc may rủi, việc liều: life is not a ~ cuộc đời không phải là cuộc đánh bạc 2 v. đánh bạc; đầu cơ; làm liều: to ~ away one’s fortune thua bạc sạch bách
The symbol “~” is used to denote the headword that appears in the extended vocabulary or expression.
5. Derivatives of the headwords are also given, each followed by their Vietnamese equivalents; these can be extended vocabulary items, idiomatic expressions or common sayings. Examples are:
reel 1 n. ống, cuộn: a ~ of cotton thread một cuộn chỉ sợi; off the ~ không ngừng, liên tục 2 v. quấn, cuốn; kéo [tơ]: to ~ off tháo chỉ ra khỏi ống; ~ to ~ chuyển từ bằng ghi âm nầy sang băng ghi âm khác 3 v. đi lảo đãûo, loạng choạng; quay cuồng nhảy nhót: my head ~s đãàu tôi choáng váng
Note: Vietnamese meanings of headwords are set in lower cases. If the Vietnamese meaning can be expressed in more than one way, these are separated by a comma (,), eg.
abide v. [abided] to ~ by giữ, (tuân) theo: we ~ by our promise chúng tôi giữ lời hứa của chúng tôi
and if the meanings in Vietnamese are different altogether, they are separated by a semicolon (;), eg.
director n. giám đốc; người điều khiển; đạo diễn
6. Loanwords are written with Vietnamese pronunciation and connected by an hyphen (-): eg. a-xít, ki-lô ...
Grammar Notes
1. The use of the “/” is to avoid repetition of the word in Vietnamese, e.g. buộc/cột/trói chặt = buộc chặt, cột chặt, trói chặt.
