      Creases in Clothing

Creases are an important element in clothing, adding depth and contour. Here, we look at

typical types of creases and the areas that wrinkle easily.

      Types of creases

      Pulled creases

A straight crease formed by the fabric being pulled in one

direction. These kinds of folds form easily around areas such as

the armholes and the sleeves when the arms are raised, under

women’s breasts and around the waist when the body is twisted.

      Gathered creases

These are formed when the fabric gathers in one spot. They form

easily around the top of sleeves, around the arms and knees when

bent and on sleeves that are rolled up.

      Draped creases

These creases are created when fabric is pulled down by the force

of gravity. They form on clothing where the hem and wristbands

are drawn in, such as on a sweater, as well as on clothing that has

       a natural drape to it.

      Hollow creases

These are a type of gathered crease that forms when the fabric

gathers in one place and part of it forms a hollow. They’re

typically found in places where the fabric gathers easily, such as

around the elbows and knees, in conjunction with gathered

creases. Adding shadow in the center gives them dimension.

      Main places where creases form

      Shoulders

      Gathered creases form below the

shoulders, toward the armpit in the

sleeve and torso sections of the clothing.

When the arm is raised or extended, a

pulled crease forms from the sleeve

       toward the shoulder.

      Chests

If wearing a cut-and-sewn top, camisole

or other style of top where the hem

hangs freely, pulled creases will form

under the bust, with the fullest part of

the bust as the pivot point.

      Waists

      Gathered creases form around the

narrowing of the waist, with soft draped

creases forming that join at both sides of

the waist. They form readily on clothes

       for women with small waists.

      Elbows

      Bending the elbow creates gathered

creases and hollow creases along the

inner side. On the outer side, the bone

pulls the fabric taut so that no wrinkles

are formed and a straight line is created.

      Crotches

Gathered creases form at the top of the

crotch, radiating out toward the hips. The

way the creases form depends greatly on

the thickness of the fabric, with relatively

thick denim creating large irregular creases.

      Knees

On long pants, gathered creases and

hollow creases form around the knees on

       someone standing straight. The fabric

gathers to such an extent that it makes

the outline around the knees uneven.

      Cuffs

On items with sleeves that narrow at the

wrists, such as shirts and other items with

cuffs, the fabric gathers at the top of the

cuff to form draped creases. As the fabric

is loose, the area around the cuff looks

       slightly puffy.

      Hems

The hems of pants touch the tops of the

feet, causing the fabric to bunch and form

both gathered and hollow creases. As

gravity draws the fabric down, large

wrinkles form regardless of the thickness

       of the fabric.

      Buttons

Faint pulled creases form on either side

of buttoned-up fabric. The creases are

most significant on the side on top (for

       example, the buttonhole side).
