      For Brock,

      a very special “B”

Every lemon tree has a special kind of magic,...

...not the kind that happens when someone pulls

      a rabbit from a hat...

...or makes your kid brother disappear. Poof!

      Where’d he go?

You can’t see tree magic right away.

      It’s hidden like buried treasure.

Wander and watch. Look high and low and up close.

There are clues every spring. Flower buds form,

a BUMBLEBEE hunts for food, and the magic called

      POLLINATION begins.

img

The bee’s ANTENNAE let her smell something

very sweet. She can’t resist. Glub, glub, glub.

img

This will make yummy honey for a COLONY

      full of young, growing bees.

img

Soon, more bees smell the sweetness

      and come to drink.

img

The POLLEN collects all over the bee’s hairy body

and gets stuffed into pockets on her hind legs.

img

So many flowers! Buzz, buzz. Slurp, slurp.

      Bees are flying and moving...

img

      ...and crawling and brushing everywhere.

img

Pollen dust from the flower’s male STAMENS

rubs off the bee’s body onto the flower’s female

      PISTIL. Pollination happens whenever pollen

is moved between these flower parts. Soon...

img

...flowers drop, and tiny lemons begin to grow on the stems.

Inside each fruit are SEEDS which can grow into more trees.

img

During the summer, the little lemons grow

and slowly change, from bright green...

img

...to pale green with yellow specks to, finally...

img

      ...sunny, yellow, ripe lemons.

img

      When autumn winds blow,

it’s time to pick fat, juicy lemons.

img

We’ll use these lemons for our surprise next summer.
