The exercise of patronage was a major factor in influencing the churchmanship of a parish.

There was concern when the diocese was established that the bishop would hold the patronage independently of only fourteen of the 167 benefices, giving him few opportunities to choose priests himself. Nine vicars had, between them, the patronage of a further eighty benefices. The Vicar of Halifax alone had the gift of some thirty-one livings. Laymen, especially the landed gentry, were patrons of twenty-three livings: Sir John Ramsden held All Hallows, Almondbury, and the two Huddersfield parishes of St Peter and St John the Evangelist. Lord Savile was the patron of St Michael’s, Emley, and St Michael’s, Thornhill. Walter Spencer Stanhope of Cannon Hall was the patron of St John’s, Hoylandswaine. All Saints, Darton, was in the gift of Wentworth Blackett Beaumont of Bretton Hall, and the Countess of Cardigan and Earl Wilton made the presentation to All Saints, Batley in turn. The Rawson family were patrons of St John the Divine, Triangle.

Bodies of trustees had a further fifteen livings. Both the Peache Trustees and the Simeon Trustees had had a policy of buying up advowsons where the opportunity came, in order to ensure the livings went to men of an evangelical or low-church persuasion rather than to Anglo-Catholics. The Peache Trustees administered the advowsons established or bought up by Mrs Rebecca Disney Robinson, the well-to-do widow of a former incumbent of Woolley. These were Christ Church, St Andrew’s, and St Mary’s, Wakefield, and St Helen’s, Sandal. St James’s, Flockton, was held by the trustees of the Carter Charity.

There were single livings in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, the Duchy of Lancaster, and Keble College, Oxford. Keble had been founded only in 1870 but the benefactors of the parish of St John the Evangelist, Horbury Bridge, most notably John Sharp, the Vicar of Horbury, had decided by 1879 to nominate the Warden and scholars as the patrons of the parish, which was formed in 1884. The Crown alternated with the bishop in appointing to nine livings and had in its sole gift the important benefice of Halifax Parish Church.

Bishop How’s commissioners, reporting in 1890 on the spiritual needs of the diocese, anticipated that new livings would normally come under the patronage of the bishop and hoped that other advowsons might be transferred to him too. They suggested specifically that it would not ‘materially affect’ the position of the Vicar of Halifax if some of the livings in his gift were transferred to the bishop. They were particularly concerned that the bishop had no rural livings to bestow as it was held that he might have wished to present ‘semi-retired’ clergy to these.

Not all new livings came to the bishop, however. While St Barnabas’s, Crosland Moor (1897), St Andrew’s, Purlwell (1912), and St John’s, Staincross (1928) came directly into the gift of the bishop, the advowson of St Michael and All Angels, Cornholme (1901), was held by the Reverend Arthur Master-Whitaker and his wife, Mary Charlotte, who had built it, and Edward Lancaster retained the advowson of his 1902 Barnsley church, St Edward’s.

A gift from ‘a liberal layman’ of £500 in 1897 enabled the purchase of five of the advowsons held by the Vicar of Halifax: St Martin’s, Brighouse, St John’s, Bradshaw, St Mary’s, Luddenden, Christ Church, Mount Pellon, and St Bartholomew’s, Ripponden. Another anonymous gift of £5,000 in 1908 brought to the bishop exclusively eight of the advowsons held jointly with the Crown: St John’s, Barnsley, St Mary’s, Gomersal, St Paul’s, King Cross, St Michael’s, Mytholmroyd, Christ Church, South Ossett, St Peter’s, Sowerby, St John’s, Upperthong, and St Mary’s, Wyke.

The first decades of the twentieth century saw the beginning of the transfer of advowsons from landowning families to the bishops or, from 1921, to the new Diocesan Board of Patronage. In 1909, Lord Allendale gave St Nicholas, Cumberworth to the bishop. The patronage of Wrenthorpe was transferred to the bishop in 1908 by William Brooke. Christ Church, Helme was given in 1910 by Charles Brook.
