СКАЧАТЬ massage your face, or someone else’s, feel with your fingers for signs that might indicate restricted tissue. This may seem difficult at first but, as with all things, practice makes perfect!

While muscles create the power to produce facial movements, connective tissue provides the structure and form to do so. For example, if you were to strip a body of its muscles, you would still be left with a clear shape of a human. But if you kept the muscles and stripped away the connective tissue, you would be left with a shapeless blob. When you look at diagrams of the muscles it’s easy to see where they start and finish, but this isn’t so straightforward with connective tissue.

Rather than beginning and ending at specific points, connective tissue is like a continuous sheath that surrounds the body. When massaging you have to develop the subtle skill of tracking the connective tissue. You’ll find you have to untwist and rearrange it along several different planes at a time in order to release the tension. Because connective tissue forms a continuous network, when there is a restriction in one area, the impact of this can be felt in another area.

To understand this concept, imagine you’re putting up a tent and securing it with pegs. If the pegs are spread evenly around the tent the canvas is smooth all over. But if you have more pegs on one side than another, the tension is uneven and one side becomes more taut. In much the same way, when massaging you are trying to ease restrictions in the connective tissue and even out the tension. The effect of this is often noticed elsewhere. For example, releasing a restriction in the neck can make the whole face look more relaxed.

      the role of lymph

How many times have you looked at yourself in the morning and thought “why are my eyes so puffy and my skin so gray?” and “I must have slept very deeply because my pillow has left creases on my face.” Well, some lines can be put down to your bed linen, but morning puffiness and lack of skin tone and color are partly due to the fact that your heart pumps blood more slowly at night, causing your circulation to slow down, but even more importantly, the flow of lymph drops dramatically while you sleep – and lymph plays a crucial part in the condition of the skin.

      what is lymph?

Lymph is a clear, straw-colored fluid similar to plasma, the fluid part of blood. It starts out life as plasma, flowing through your arteries laden with oxygenated blood cells and nutrients to supply all your body’s cells. Plasma leaks out of tiny blood vessels called capillaries and into spaces between the cells in the tissues to become tissue fluid. This bathes the cells, providing oxygen and nutrients essential for energy, growth, and renewal. It also removes wastes, bacteria, and toxins from the cells. The tissue fluid then drains into the lymphatic capillaries, where it becomes lymph.

Lymph flows in a closed network of vessels in a system that is completely separate from the blood circulation. The lymph capillaries join together to form lymph veins or lymphatics. The lymphatic system has no pump of its own, so to flow efficiently it relies on the movement of muscles, for example, when breathing or walking. As muscles contract they squeeze the lymph along the lymphatic vessels, which have valves to prevent the fluid flowing back. The lymph fluid eventually returns to the bloodstream via a connection between the lymphatic and venous systems, situated at the base of the neck.

You could think of lymph as a kind of internal irrigation system draining wastes from the tissues. At night, when this drainage system slows down, fluid builds up in the tissues. That’s why your face can appear puffy first thing in the morning. Lack of physical exercise during the day also slows the flow of lymph. But that’s not the only thing to watch out for – poor diet, pollution, and shallow breathing can all restrict lymphatic drainage.

One of the most important functions of lymph is its part in the body’s defences. At intervals, the lymphatics empty into chambers called lymph nodes where the lymph is filtered and bacteria and other invading organisms are trapped and inactivated by white blood cells, or leukocytes, of the immune system. There are various kinds of leukocytes; some, such as the small lymphocytes, produce antibodies to destroy bacteria and viruses, while others are phagocytic cells that engulf and destroy foreign particles and organisms. Lymph must pass through at least two nodes before it is totally cleansed and can return to the bloodstream. If the lymph system gets overloaded you can see the effect in the condition of your skin, such as the appearance of spots, blackheads, and dry patches. While these problems can be treated easily, they needn’t occur in the first place.

      ancient wisdom

In Ayurveda, the lymphatic network is known as the kapha, or mucus-carrying, system. Thousands of years ago, Ayurvedic doctors developed a massage technique that included the manipulation of pressure points to balance the body’s energy pathways. They thought that increasing kapha activity would improve the flow of nourishment to the bodily organs, aiding the movement of joints, and boosting patience, solidarity, stamina, and determination. When you look at the pressure points with a Western eye you’ll notice that they correspond well with the position of the lymph nodes! How wise our ancestors were!

      Iymph and face lift massage

Face lift massage is a system that draws on much of the knowledge of the ancients. It involves massage and the application of pressure to certain points on the body to boost the drainage of lymph. Lymph can take time to thoroughly cleanse itself. In the meantime, the excess fluid under the skin and the build-up of toxins can be seen on the face, leaving it looking saggy, dull, gray, and puffy. Massaging the facial tissues helps to speed up lymph drainage and ensures that the vessels are cleansed of waste products that have not been removed naturally. There are important lymph nodes in the armpits, groin, and the back of the knees, but many nodes are in the neck, and by unblocking these you’ll soon see a difference in your face.
