      BRIDELL, Frederick Lee (son of Mr. Bridell of Southampton, builder). b. Southampton 7 Nov. 1831; apprenticed to a picture dealer 1846–53; studied painting at Munich 1854–7; his chief works are ‘Sunset on the Atlantic,’ exhibited at Liverpool Nov. 1857; ‘Temple of Venus’ painted in emulation of Turner 1858 and ‘The Coliseum by moonlight’ painted at Rome 1858, exhibited at the R.A. 1859 and at International Exhibition 1862; his patron James Wolff of Southampton acquired so many of his works that he formed a ‘Bridell gallery’ which was sold for nearly £4,000. d.
