      Лексические значения терминов «polymerization» и «полимеризация», несмотря на их похожее написание и произношение, отличаются. Согласно различным англоязычным источникам (например, справочнику ИЮПАК по химической терминологии), под термином «polymerization» понимается процесс получения высокомолекулярного вещества (полимера) из мономеров без учета характера его образования. Русским термином «полимеризация» называют один из двух основных способов получения полимеров, заключающийся в многократном присоединении молекул низкомолекулярного вещества (мономера, олигомера) к активным центрам в растущей молекуле полимера по радикальному или ионному механизмам.
