Chamoiseau’s Memory Traces is a reminder that the conservation of such sites should reserve a place for creativity, for the imagination and for an openness to affective responses to the past. Such alternative forms of engagement, he argues, permit access to interstitial spaces, between the cracks of the ruin—it is from these that muffled, forgotten and otherwise marginalized voices will whisper back.
