‘Oh, come on now, surely you can do better than this? No?’
The captive’s lack of response necessitates a punishment. I am directing this show, not him. The figure uses the cattle prod and then speaks in a voice both melodious and compelling.
‘Right. The floor is yours. Your chance – your final chance – what is your last request? Your message to someone you love. Make it count, Khalid. You don’t get a re-take.’
The figure moves into position behind him, arms raised, hammer at the ready and says, ‘Your turn. Make it good – make it clear. You only have one shot at this. It’s your final-night production. What is your last request?’
The captive’s eyes flicker. His mouth opens. He licks his lips, tries to lift his head. He’s trying hard. I’m sure you’ll agree. His final performance – his swan song – is poignant. Let’s hope it counts.
As the camera zooms in to the captive’s face, we can see tears pouring from his eyes. In a final show of bravery, he looks directly into the camera. ‘Let her know …’
You can see how much he’s trying. How much he wants to do this. This is his legacy. His final chance. I’m sure we’ve all got our fingers crossed that he doesn’t stumble at the last hurdle. He’s tried all the way along the trial – given a stellar, if ultimately redundant performance. Let’s give him a round of applause to spur him on. Come on now, don’t be mean, applaud his efforts.
Sound-over: raucous applause and cheering.
Come on, Khalid, you can do this, lad. You can do this. You need to do this. You know you do.
Now, at last, the part we’ve all been waiting for. Listen in now. You don’t want to miss a word, do you?
‘Tell Nikki, I saw the test. I saw it. Tell her … love her … brilliant mum … brilliant.’
What a finale! What a last request. Watch now for the last scene. The figure steadies, then in one fell swoop brings the hammer down.
Curtain!
