      Dear David,

When I was in New York last week, I went shopping at Bloomingdale’s. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon and there were a lot of people in the leather goods department. And guess what happened! I watched a young woman who shoplifted an expensive bag. I was so surprised that I couldn’t say anything ……..

      41 K A taste of America

Fast food is now found all over the world. Not only hamburgers, but fried chicken and hot dogs are eaten everywhere. People are in a hurry, they want a quick snack.

In big American cities you can eat the national dishes of every country in the world. Where you eat depends on how much money you want to spend. You can get excellent steaks or seafood in more expensive restaurants. If you don’t want to spend too much, you can go to a snack bar, a coffee shop, a deli-restaurant, a sidewalk café, or to one of the fast food chains. A typical dish is a Pastrami – a kind of spiced smoked beef served on black rye bread.

      41 N Summary

Two strangers met in a restaurant in New York. One was Lauren Schmidt, a New Yorker. The other said his name was the Honourable Pilkington Booth ffrench. He had an English accent, and Lauren seemed impressed that he was the son of a lord. She gave him an important piece of advice – to take care where he went in New York and to be careful on the subway. They arranged to meet again the following day – and he went out without paying. A man he visited in a very run-down part of the city called him “Frenchie”, and gave him details of a hold-up he had planned. He was to hold up a liquor store in uptown New York and share the money with him. Frenchie successfully held up the liquor store. The next day he went back to the delicatessen restaurant for his meeting with Lauren. In the deli, the television news reported the hold-up and gave a description of Frenchie. He was about to leave when he bumped into Lauren. She turned out to be a woman police officer, and arrested him for armed robbery. As she took him away, she reminded him of the piece of advice she’d given him – to take care where he went!
