There are two kinds of people in this life: Those who walk into a room and say, ‘Well, here I am!’ And those who walk in and say, ‘Ahh, there you are.’

CHAPTER TWO How to Make People Like You Instantly!

From the time we are little tykes rattling the cot rails for attention until the time we catch a cloud to carry us to the great beyond, we want people to like us. Kids call it ‘popularity’, whereas adults prefer ‘charisma’ or ‘leadership’ ability. But even if the generations can’t agree on a word for ‘it’, they know what it is. And everybody wants IT.

Quite simply, IT is that quintessential quality that makes people like you and want to be part of your world today, tomorrow or forever. We have already looked at some ways to come across as a friendly Somebody to everyone you meet. Here are some further little tricks to spread sunshine and make strangers smile, wherever you go.

      In Your Shoes

Here is a technique that will have smiles breaking out all over. Whenever you say anything to anybody, pretend you are not the speaker, but the listener. What is the listener thinking and feeling when you speak to him or her? Then, whenever appropriate, speak from your listener’s perspective. Try it! You’ll see scowls turn to smiles, dullness turn to delight and NO turn to YES!

      TECHNIQUE 10:

      In Your Shoes

From now on, hear everything you say through your listener’s ears and, whenever appropriate, phrase it from his or her perspective. For example, suppose you are asking a policeman for directions to your hotel. Instead of saying, ‘Excuse me, could you tell me where the Midtown Hotel is?’, venture an ‘In Your Shoes’ way of asking.

‘I know it’s not your job, but could you direct me to the Midtown Hotel?’

      Конец ознакомительного фрагмента.
