Благодаря возможности индивидуального вмешательства для конкретных людей, групп населения или субпопуляций, для общественного здравоохранения и клинической практики могут возникнуть этические, правовые и социальные последствия. Высказанные в настоящей монографии возможные соображения авторами включают балансирование пользы и вреда для здоровья между отдельными людьми и более широким сообществом, минимизацию угроз личной конфиденциальности и автономии и обеспечение справедливого распределения ограниченных ресурсов. В этой монографии авторами рассматривается возможное применение информации о патогенах и геноме человека к конкретным вирусным инфекциям, которые имеют крупномасштабные последствия для общественного здравоохранения, но различаются характеристиками, такими как: легкость передачи, хроничность, тяжесть, предотвратимость и излечимость.
