СКАЧАТЬ that are known to carry out dissimilatory iron reduction, such as Desulfobacteraceae (Lovley et al. 1993), Desulfobulbaceae (Lovley et al. 1993; Knoblauch et al. 1999), Desulfurmonadaceae (Roden and Lovley 1993; Liesack and Finster 1994; Coates et al. 1995; Krumholz et al. 1996; Lonergan et al. 1996), Geobacteraceae (Lovley and Phillips 1998; Caccavo et al. 1994), and Pelobaceraceae (Lovley et al. 1995; Lonergan et al. 1996), are present and possibly active in the iron reduction zone. As mentioned above, these bacteria are versatiles capable of reducing both iron and sulfate. While the abundance of potential iron reducers decreases with depth, the abundance of sulfate reducers Desulfoccocus and Desulfobacteria increases with depth. To date, pure cultures of Desulfococcus have not been shown to reduce iron.
