Author Biography
Scott D. Sudhoff received the BS (highest distinction), MS, and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1988, 1989, and 1991, respectively. From 1991 to 1993, he served as a consultant for PC Krause and Associates in aerospace power and actuation systems. From 1993 to 1997, he served as a faculty member at the University of Missouri‐Rolla, and in 1997, he joined Purdue University where he currently serves as the Michael and Katherine Birck Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Professor Sudhoff has worked for over 30 years in electric machinery, drives, and power‐electronics‐based distribution systems. His research sponsors have included the US Navy, Army, Air‐Force, DOE, and NASA, as well as many industrial partners. This work has resulted in 6 patents and the graduation of over 30 doctoral students.
He has nearly 100 journal publications and over 100 conference publications including 5 prize papers. He is a co‐author of Analysis of Electric Machinery and Drives Systems, second and third editions, both published by IEEE Press/Wiley. In 2006, he won the IEEE Power Engineering Society Cyril Veinott Electromechanical Energy Conversion Award for outstanding contributions to the field of electromechanical energy conversion. In 2008, he became an IEEE Fellow. He served as editor‐in‐chief of IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion from 2007 to 2013 and the editor‐in‐chief of IEEE Power and Energy Systems Technology Journal (which later become IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy) from 2013 to 2019.
His interests include electric machinery, power electronics, marine and aerospace power systems, applied control, power magnetics, and evolutionary computing. Much of his current research focuses on genetic algorithms and their application to power electronic converter and electric machine design.
Outside of power magnetics, his interests include running and astronomical imaging where he specializes in planetary nebula and peculiar galaxies.
Preface
This work is intended either as a text book for a senior‐level/beginning graduate‐level course, or as a resource for the practicing engineer. There are three objectives for the text. The first is to set forth a systematic multi‐objective‐optimization‐based approach for the semi‐automated design of power magnet components. A second objective of the text is to discuss physical principals and analysis necessary for the design of power magnetic devices including fields, magnet equivalent circuit analysis, core loss, eddy current losses, thermal analysis, skin and proximity effect, and the like. The third objective of the text is to provide some fundamental background in a variety of devices including inductors, electromagnets, transformers, and rotating СКАЧАТЬ
