      Introduction

The art of the letter and the hand written note are time-honored ways to convey important and personal thoughts. Fine papers, ink and penmanship help to underscore the personal touch, and they can convey something of the personality of the sender or the spirit of the occasion.

Many notes are delivered folded and slipped into envelopes, keeping the contents private. However, the manner of folding a note is another special touch that can add so much more to the experience, for both writer and recipient.

In this kit you will find both traditional and modern examples of the art of the folded note. The scope is from simple to intricate; abstract to representational; somber to whimsical: a wide range of possibilities! Custom printed papers are included to make your notes well dressed for any occasion.

Once you learn how to fold any of these designs you can explore many kinds of fine papers for your notes. All of the projects use square shaped paper. You will find it easy to make larger or smaller notes and envelopes by folding from larger or smaller squares. You will soon have your favorites committed to memory. Then it is easy to write a quick note for a “Thank you!”, “Sorry I missed you,” or “Congratulations!” without a worry for informality. Even the humblest papers are elevated to elegance by folding.

      Ship Mates

BY MICHAEL G. LAFOSSE, ADAPTED FROM THE TRADITIONAL PRELIMINARY BASE SAILBOAT.

Like a double-heart locket, this note is only complete with its mate. It is a puzzle and a trick, but above all it is an elegant vehicle for a two-page letter.

1 Begin with the colored side of the paper facing up. Fold in half, corner to corner. Unfold.

      2 Turn the paper over.

3 Fold in half, edge to edge. First bottom to top, unfold, and then left to right. Unfold.

4 Rotate your paper to orient the diagonal crease so that it is running left to right. Fold the top and bottom corners to meet at the middle.

5 Your paper will look like this.

6 Using the valley and mountain creases, mountain-fold each of the two side corners in half and bring them up to meet each other, forming the sails of the ship.

7 View in progress. Notice that the center of the paper stays down while the tips of the sails move up. Continue to collapse the shape by moving the front edge of the ship to meet the back edge.

8 The completed ship shape. You will need to make two.

9 Join the ships by fitting the sails of one into the front pocket of the other, and the sails of the other ship into the back pocket of the first.

10 The completed note. An interesting effect, which can provide some fun, is that you will not be able to separate these two notes from each other by pulling on the corners. Try it. No matter how hard you pull on opposite corners they will not separate. You must hold one by the edges and slide the other one out by pushing with your thumb at the middle of the slot.

      Flag Note

      BY MICHAEL G. LAFOSSE

This quick and simple note has a clever locking point at the corner. You can use it as a note, or you can use it as a wrapper to gift-wrap cash or theater tickets.

You can use any square of paper. If writing on the blank side, begin colored side up. An eight-inch square paper will make a note that is approximately 6 X 3.5 inches.

1 Fold the top edge down, about 1/5 th of the square’s height—it does not have to be precise.
