Description: The Civil Rights Congress of Michigan was organized in 1935 as the Conference for the Protection of Civil Rights. The Conference opposed, among other things, the Black Legion and the Ku Klux Klan, fascism, and discrimination. About 1938 the name of the group was changed to the Civil Rights Federation. From 1941 the group attacked the Dies Committee, the Mundt-Nixon Bills, and the Smith Act. About 1945 the name of the organization changed to the Civil Rights Congress. They dissolved in 1955. Correspondents include Charles Beard and Granville Hicks. Part 1, Series II, Black Legion - KKK, 1936-1952, contains files on Black Legion, KKK, and KKK - United Sons of America.
