Front Cover: One of the most rewarding experiences you can have is re-assembling your car with restored, factory-correct parts. With fresh paint on the 1970 Javelin, author Scott Campbell begins to put his car back together.

Title Page: This 1973 Javelin shows all the signs of being a great restoration candidate. The car featured the 360 with an auto on the console, Fresh Plum paint, white vinyl roof, and a white interior. (Photo Courtesy Michelle Kiffmeyer)

       Back Cover Photos

Top Left: Carefully position the axle over the leaf springs. Raise the springs until the center bolt aligns with the hole in the spring perch, bolt the axle to the springs, and then lift everything together to install the rear shackles. Protect the axle and springs from coming in contact with each other or the garage floor.

Top Right: An original lower radiator hose removed from a 1968 AMX displays the part number and early-style “AM” logo in white. Lower radiator hoses commonly contain a spring to prevent collapsing. As with the top hose, it was secured with Wittek tower-style hose clamps at either end.

Middle Left: The rivet heads can be drilled without spinning. A spinning rivet quickly cuts a large hole through the door tag making it impossible to reinstall it with original-style rivets.

Middle Right: AMX over-the-top racing stripes were part of the performance Go Package, but could be deleted upon request. They were not available on cars equipped with the 290 V-8. After applying vinyl stripes, park outside in bright sunshine for a couple of days to set the glue and allow any small bubbles to disappear.

Bottom Left: Just like the panels they attach, bolt head markings differ from year to year. Label and bag all of the attaching hardware as it is removed so it can be reused in the same position. If assembling a car that was purchased disassembled, be sure that any visible fasteners are the same type with uniform markings.

Bottom Right: As with the quarter panel, trim the outer wheelhouse back until clean metal is reached. Reproduction outer quarters are made in two sections (front and rear); complete one half of the job at a time. Keeping half of the original quarter in place temporarily allows for perfect alignment of the replacement panel.
